Bad News

Fred is out of the race (if you care, and some do). The stock market is an absolute mess (not the first or last time). Calvinism is growing in the SBC (and that's bad news for many). The city of Allen is trying to get folks to obey the law and some are screaming that regular folks moving into the city would rather be homeless and live under a bridge than pay a $5 registration fee (that anyone would believe that to be true means the idiocy level is way up, and that's bad news). Airline fares are going up (cancel that trip to the coast). Church attendance is down (hey, I care!). Heath Ledger is dead (another life cut way too short).

Isn't there any good news out there? Well, yes! You and I need to report it, shout it out, make it heard above the din of despair. And if you're having trouble finding it -- you need to get your self into a Bible believing, Bible teaching, Bible preaching Church. Hey, the whole thing is GOOD NEWS!

If you don't know where to find one of those Churches - drop me a note! I know of several.

It's only Good News if everything in the Bible is preached in reference to the heart of Scripture:

the Good News of the sinless life of Christ, the eternal Son of God;

his propitiation of the Father for the justification and redemption of sinners in his death;

and his glorious resurrection to vindicate his claims of deity

and to assure us of the forgiveness of our sins (primarily)

and power to live an obedient life by the power of the Spirit which raised him (secondarily),

and the hope of our own resurrection in him to eternal joy in the presence of the triune God when he returns.

The preaching in that hypothetical "Bible believing-teaching-preaching church" must focus on this at the heart of all exposition and application.

Only then will the people find Good News.

If all I ever hear about is what I ought to do, I'm hearing bad news. Don't be satisfied until they get around to announcing what the Father sent Jesus to do for you in the light of your inability to do what you ought. And I mean every Sunday!

PS--This commenter submits that it's also good news that Calvinism is on the rise among Southern Baptists. Every theological tradition has a favorite doctrinal obsession, and Calvinism's is the glory of God as revealed in the Gospel as your only hope! The rest are distracted by trivialities!

To God alone be the glory!
