Fundamental Change

LISA LEFF, Associated Press Writer, reported: SAN FRANCISCO - In a monumental victory for the gay rights movement, the California Supreme Court overturned a voter-approved ban on gay marriage Thursday in a ruling that would allow same-sex couples in the nation's biggest state to tie the knot.

It's a sad day in the neighborhood. Here's why. Our forefathers, the framers of the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were careful to establish a democratic republic and not an oligarchy. Yet, every year (or less) we move toward the polar opposite of what they envisioned and what we have celebrated all these years since the founding of our great nation.

Now, those who are in positions of authority - the California Supreme Court, the Supreme Court of the United States, and other Courts in other places, have decided that it is their job to "legislate from the bench" and override the will of the public and the electorate. Who knows if this ruling, and others in many places around our country, and, of course, in Washington, D. C., will stand up. But the drift is on and moving ever forward. When we become an oligarchy, you might want to make sure you are in the right "class."

If you're concerned about my take on the issue of "gay marriage" here is that tidbit: God must be running his patience in hyper-drive to keep from destroying this nation, given that "Sodom and Gomorrha" thing.

In the beggining wasnt marriage a covenant between God, a man and a woman? At what point in history did the govt decide it was their business to allow or prohibit a marriage? Even if the govt allows same sex marriage i dont think God is obligated to recognize it. Is He?

Jason,
Government seems to get "into" everything. You are right, of course. God doesn't recognize "same sex" marriage for anything more than it is- i.e. an abomination.

The covenant under which marriage was instituted by God is the covenant instituted in the garden, which applies to the whole human race, whether believing or unbelieving. God not only expected man to abstain from the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, he also expected them to tend and keep the garden, exercise dominion over the earth and to be fruitful and multiply. Every human is in covenant with God to do these things--in this sense we all have a "personal (covenantal) relationship with God."

As such, marriage is not in any sense necessarily under the jurisdiction of the church, although Christians do incorporate the exchange of marriage vows in the context of corporate worship (what we know of as the modern "wedding ceremony" is actually a worship service). Human governments have just as much right to officiate this basic human institution as it has a responsibility to maintain it as it has always been--i.e., by marrying men to women, not same sex marriages.

If God providentially refrains from seeing to it that his unregenerate creatures marry the right kinds of people to the right kinds of people, then his judgment will certainly be visible in the further dissolution of society. We must continue to pray, preach and vote, and those believers God calls to politics as their vocation should run and govern in a way that is at least consistent with the ordinances instituted by God in the beginning!
